About Middle of the Road Adventures
Welcome to Middle of the Road Adventures — a travel blog for independent travellers who want more than backpacking and less than luxury.
Over the years, as we travelled more and more, we kept running into the same problem. Whenever we researched a destination, independent travel often seemed to mean uncomfortable accommodation, extreme backpacking, and stories of things going wrong. On the other hand, organised tours and travel agencies felt too rigid, too rushed, and too far removed from how we actually wanted to experience a place.
We enjoy comfort when we travel — a good night’s sleep, our own space, time to slow down — but we value independence even more. So we naturally gravitated toward a halfway point: travelling independently, avoiding tourist traps, staying mindful of our budget, but without sacrificing comfort or enjoyment. Somewhere along the way, middle of the road became our travel style.
Middle of the Road Adventures was created to share the tips, lessons, and small discoveries we’ve picked up along the way. We focus on places that don’t always get the spotlight: quieter neighbourhoods, small towns, overlooked regions and local eateries. The goal isn’t to travel as cheaply as possible or as luxuriously as possible — it’s to travel well, in a way that feels off the beaten track but still enjoyable.
What you’ll find here
On this blog, you’ll find:
- Practical destination guides that go beyond the tourist trail
- Realistic itineraries for independent travellers

This blog is for travellers who:
- Like comfort, but don’t want luxury travel
- Want independence without organised tours

A note on food and practical realities
You’ll also find occasional content about eating well while travelling, including tips for navigating food intolerances abroad. I have always suffered from food intolerances and sometimes experiencing local delicacies, eating street food (which I love) can be nervewracking. This isn’t the main focus of the blog, but it’s something I am passionate to share to help others overcome their fears andully enjoy their off-the-beaten-track journeys, mishaps and all.
Why “middle of the road”?
Because travel doesn’t have to be extreme to be meaningful.
Middle of the Road Adventures is about balance: comfort without excess, freedom without chaos, and memorable experiences without coming home exhausted or broke.
Whether you’re planning your next trip or dreaming about future adventures, we hope this blog helps you travel with confidence, curiosity, and a sense of ease.
